Our musician & staff picks for the 2013-2014 Southbank Season

With the new season fast approaching, we spoke with the OAE staff and players about what they’re most looking forard to…

Pick of the season – Tristes apprêts (Rameau) in the concert on September 30 – some pieces just give me a warm glow inside even to think about them, and this is one of them!
Maggie Faultless, violin

The concert that I’m super excited about next Season is Gamechangers: A Forgotten Cello on 25 March.
I had never heard of the violoncello da spalla before this concert was programmed. After listening to Youtube videos featuring the ‘cello da spalla, I really love the sound and just can’t wait to hear some of my favourite composers played on this curious instrument!
Isabelle Tawil, Development Manager, Individual Giving

Next April we are working with the famous conductor Semyon Bychkov for the first time. It will be fascinating to see how the chemistry works between us and to see what sort of journey he takes us on in these two wonderful symphonies, Beethoven 7 and Schubert 9 , the great C major.  Come and join us on this journey and see what you think!
Martin Kelly, viola section

I’m really looking forward to seeing and hearing a performance of Vivaldi on the violoncello da spalla – a small cello played under the chin, and ‘extinct’ until Sigiswald Kujken gave it the kiss of life.  Kuijken, a pioneer of the early music movement, also directed the first ever OAE concert 27 years ago, so their reunion will add another frisson of excitement to what will be an extraordinary concert on 25 March 2014.
Katy Bell, Press Manager

The concert that I’m particularly looking forward to is in March 2014 with Sigiswald Kuijken.  This legendary violinist gave the very first concert with the OAE back in 1986 and we are all looking forward to welcoming him back.  And the great attraction of his Baroque programme is that it will be featuring the fascinating, and now virtually obsolete, instrument, the violoncello da spalla which Mr Kuijken has made it his mission to rehabilitate.  Cellists are used to the perennial joke, often repeated by taxi drivers and others who think that it is the funniest and most original joke ever: “I bet you have trouble playing that under your chin!”, and the cellists smile sweetly and say, “ha-ha!” in reply.  Well, with the violoncello da spalla, we really do get to see a cello (albeit a slightly smaller sized one) played under the chin, but from the videos I have seen of Sigiswald Kuijken playing it, he appears to have very little trouble in doing so!
Stephen Carpenter, Chief Executive

I’m looking forward to Boyce’s Solomon in June 2014.  It’s typical of us here at the OAE to resurrect a piece that was a staple of the repertoire, which has fallen out of fashion.  I’m keen to hear what we’ve been missing.  And of course, I’m also intrigued by the fact that it was all too much for Victorian sensibilities!
Clare Norburn, Director of Development

I can’t wait for all that CPE Bach in January! It’s an early keyboard players dream to see both a harpsichord and fortepiano on stage. Plus, I get to play in the rest of it which will be a real privilege. I haven’t worked with Mahan or Danny before so it’s great to have this opportunity. Thanks OAE.
Robert Howarth, Keyboards

After being introduced to Rameau at Glyndebourne, I’m really looking forward to hearing more of his stuff on 30 September.  I’m also keen to see Gamechangers: A Forgotten Cello, not only because it features Vivaldi’s awesome La Follia, but also because I want to see Sigiswald Kuijken on the strange and brilliant violoncello da spalla.
Matthew Grindon, Press and Marketing Officer

As I’ve been away for 9 months on sabbatical I’m going to allow myself two choices! First, The Works, on 7 November. Our fantastic leader Maggie Faultless will be directing Beethoven’s Symphony 8 from the violin and guiding the audience through the piece as well – should be an enlightening (pun intended) evening. My other (most definitely not ‘second choice’ ) is a month later, on 15 December. A rather belated UK premiere for Offenbach’s opera, Fantasio. From everything I’ve heard about it so far it seems its been rather unjustly neglected – plus this performance has a truly stunning cast including Sarah Connolly and Marlis Peterson. It should be a fascinating and thrilling evening.
William Norris, Communications Director
